Are You Listening?

When was the last time you heard from God? Think about it. Has God's still, small voice been drowned out by the constant noise from work, family, church and friends? I know sometimes the noise is too much for me.
What can we do to be ready to hear God's voice? For one thing we need to be faithful and obedient servants. We must be ready to respond to Him just as Samuel was. Samuel was in the right place to listen. Are you? I know I am not always. We must have the posture that invites God to speak to us: faithful, obedient, humble, waiting and receptive.
If we want to hear God speak we must try to prepare ourselves to be ready. Be prepared when you are in a place of sanctuary; as you lay awake in the early morning hours, while you wait in the car to pick up your children(this tends to be my place), or on an evening walk. Try to let go of the mental noise we all suffer from, wait in faithful, obedient readiness. When God calls your name, respond, "Speak, Lord , for your servant is listening." Don't miss it. Don't just go through your quiet time because you know that is something your supposed to do. Really listen.
"O Lord Almighty, blessed is the man who trust in you." Psalm 84:12

Great Times

From Sept of 2000 until June of 2006 I worked in the Labor & Delivery unit @ UMC here in Lubbock. I can honestly say that those years were some of the best of my life. The friendships and relationships that grew out of that time I will never forget. I remember when I made the decision to come from the dept I was in (NICU for 5 yrs) to L&D. I was very nervous because all I had dealt with straight out of nursing school was babies not with the adult mamas they came from. I was immediately made to feel welcome and I learned the art of L&D nursing from some of the best.

I soon discovered that the people I was working with were just not going to be my co-workers but my second family. It all began at the top with Ruth (best nurse manager, hands down). She had the unique ability to be your boss when she needed to be, but you knew she was your friend first. With that type of boss the trickle down effect went to all of the staff. We would sometimes get on each other nerves, just as family does, but when it came down to it, we were there for each other. We were truly a team that worked hard to help each other. There were days of blood, sweat and tears but at the end of the day we knew we had done a good job. We helped birth each others children, went through each others tragedies and triumphs, and just loved having coffee together and just really knowing each other and our families.

We always dreaded July 1st because here would come all the new residents. We knew it would be a trying time but I like to feel that we had some hand in developing these young doctors into fine physicians. We had some wonderful attendings but we really love Dr. Mac and Dr. F-S. I am proud to call them friends still today. There were wonderful and some not so wonderful residents. We know who they are. Who can forget the family practice residents. They always knew the way to our hearts, bring us pens from the med reps. They knew we would take care of them.

So here is to all the women I worked with and some of the men. I am going to attempt to name you guys but if I leave you out don't take offense, you were a great part of my life: Ruth, Kat, the big L ,the Lori's, Lucille ,Ginger, Carla, Chris, J'Layne, Kyle, Kevin, Christina, the Deb's, Amanda, the Darlene's, The Tammy's, Bev, JJ, Cindy, Sharon B., Bridgett, Irma, Jo, Sonya, Kelly,The Rebecca's, the Melissa's, Linda, Denise, the Katey's, Sid, Loli, Holly, Micah, and the one we lost, Barbara, how we miss you.

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of having dinner with some of the individuals. It was such a great time. We must do it more often. It is nice to know that even though some of us have moved away, retired, work together in a different place and those that continue in L&D, that we still come together from that common bond we share. God never makes mistakes, he puts us where we need to be for the time we need to be and I am grateful for the time he put me there. I raise my glass to these fine people and know I will always care for you all.

Easter Fun and Questions

My boys had a great time coloring Easter eggs on Saturday evening. I treasure these times with them for I know before I know it they will be grown and gone living their own lives. We enjoy engaging in the traditional things of Easter such as coloring eggs, hunting eggs and our little one still enjoys the Easter Bunny (the truth be known, our older one does too even though he will never admit it). However, we make sure that we do not lose focus of what Easter is really about.
My husband and I were discussing the fact that it does not seem that people put the emphasis on Easter that they should. When you get down to it, I feel that Easter should be just as big of a holiday as Christmas or even bigger. Granted, Jesus had to be born for the events of salvation to occur, but when you think of the sacrifice that He went through for us. I just can't even imagine. We all know we would lay our lives on the line for our children or other loved ones but would we be willing to do the same for strangers or for someone who had wronged us? So at this time of year I am thankful for what Christ has done for me and I will try to never take it for granted as I have before. Please Lord, keep me strong.

National Tragedy

During this day and time of many national tragedies such as increasing gas prices, the mortgage crisis, presidential elections, the war in Iraq and illegal alien issues I have felt compelled to write on the national tragedy of America's favorite past time---Baseball.

Baseball, truly God's game. As much as I love football in this crazy football state of Texas, there is just something about spring baseball; not the 102 degree summer ball but the spring kind, where the sun shines bright in the big blue sky but the breeze is still a little crisp. Even though the steroid scandal is putting a shadow over the professional ranks, I am more concerned with baseball on a much smaller scale. African-American youngsters and little league baseball.

As I stated in my very first blog entry, my husband had been asked to coach in the MLK little league here in Lubbock. After making sure our soon to be 12 yr-old son was okay about playing in the league, my husband decided he would take the offer. The problem with this league is that there is not a lot of parental participation and the turn out for the kids is often low. We knew things would be different than other leagues our son has played in. Usually too much parental involvement.

We didn't know exactly how different until tryouts started a few weeks ago. There has been a shortage of kids signing up. In the 11 and 12 yr-old division we have yet been able to fill 4 teams. This has been somewhat frustrating since every other little league in town (5 in total) have more kids than they can handle. I know financial issues is part of the problem. A kid can play basketball with just a hoop and a ball, where baseball takes much more. We have many kids coming to play with no glove. We have loaned out many and through our church should be able to supply more.

The kids we have on our team have been great. Many have never even played before but are very willing to learn. It has been my husband's goal to try increase their interest in the game and to learn some lessons on and off the field as well. It is hard to compete with football and basketball with the marketing tools and money that are invested in them. Baseball just doesn't get the glamour appeal of the other two. We just want these kids to be proud to play a game that so many sacrificed for them to play like Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige and many others.

We know God has lead us down this road and we know He has a grand plan for us to follow. Think of these young men this season as they prepare to learn this game. Go 2008 MLK Red Socks!

Dirt Roads

As a child growing up in the country I spent many days outside playing. Sometimes taking walks on the dirt back roads. Those of you who grew up as I did will recall the feeling of walking on those dusty roads. Sometimes the roads were very rocky and your steps would be uneven and other times the road would be smoother and you would have a rhythmic sound going and you would stay in step. I think our walk with Christ can be the same, sometimes a little jagged and rough and other times you are right in step.

We know we must continually tune in to the voice of the Spirit and follow His lead but how difficult it can be. The Spirit moves us to places where we might not feel comfortable, to step back when we want to go forward and vice versa. Sometimes that rhythm is too slow or too fast. By following the Spirit we have to resist the urge to live life our way and relinquish control.

There are certain situations that it can be so hard to follow the Spirit. It can be so difficult not to follow the popular trend of society and do things that it says is okay to do. When you feel you have been wronged or unappreciated to let go of resentment. When the enemy is perched on your shoulder and is chatting in your ear and tries to convince you it is no big deal if you do it this time. You can always make it up later. This causes such a battle between the flesh and Spirit.

We have to come to a point where we need to ask ourselves, "Who am I being led by?" My self, with it emotions, worries, pride, fears, and selfishness? Am I being led by the enemy or am I being lead by the Holy Spirit?

Every time we move with the Spirit we are saying yes to God. We become no longer bound by the wants of our flesh or the dark one whom is perched on our shoulder and promises us such grand things only to crush us. We can choose to be moved by the Spirit.

"But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law...Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." Galatians 5:18,25

14 And Counting

Well, I finally have the time to get back to my blogging. Today being the day that it is, there was only one subject I could possibly discuss. Today is mine and Shawn's 14th wedding anniversiry. It is hard to believe that I have been married longer than I attended public school. It hasn't always been the prettiest thing in the world but it works for us.

When I reflect back on our time together, there have been so many ups and downs but somehow we have managed to pull through it all. I know when we got married that were alot of doubters out there. I guarantee you that many people never thought that we would make it this far. People always say, "Y'all are so different" or my favorite is "Your husband is not what I pictured your him to look like." Whatever that means.

There are many reasons that I feel that we have made it work. We are both products of the 1980's divorce scene. Both sets of our parents divorced in the 80's for different reasons but the end result was the same, we were kids of divorce. There are people out there that will tell you that divorce does not affect kids but we will both tell you that it does. I makes you carry around some heavy baggage. We were both determined that we would not do that to ourselves or our children.

Another reason we hold it together is the fact that we are really each others best friend. There are times we drive each other crazy but when it comes down to it, we would just rather spend our time together. We do have friends but usually we chose to be with each other. We really enjoy our time as a family with our two great boys.

The last reason I feel we have succeed is that we have put God in charge of our marriage. Now, don't miss understand me, there have been times that we tried to do things our way and not His and that is when we have suffered our most heartache. I like to credit Bro. James McLeod for giving us great marriage counseling prior to our marriage as a base for our godly marriage and Pastor Mike Martindale as being a great teacher in helping our marriage continue to grow with Christ.

So here is to 14 great years and two sons later that we are still going strong. I only hope we continue to grow and change as we need and that our marriage can be an example to others of what a godly marriage can be, teamwork that involves each other in conjunction with God. All the players must work together to keep it going. Happy Anniversary Shawn. Love Ya!

I Believe

I have been working some crazy hours lately and I've been walking around in a fog for the past two weeks. There have been many topics I have wanted to blog about but just have not had the time to do it well.

In step my father-in-law. I know most people do not enjoy getting forwards but he does send me some worthwhile info. I really enjoyed this one and thought you might to.

I BELIEVE

I believe- That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other.
And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.
I believe- That we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.
I believe- That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while
and you must forgive them for that.
I believe- That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for
true love.
I believe- That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.
I believe- That it's taking me a long time to become the person want to be.
I believe- That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time
you see them.
I believe- That you can keep going long after you think you can't.
I believe- That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.
I believe- That either you control your attitude or it controls you.
I believe- That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done,
regardless of the consequences. (ie Jesus)
I believe- That money is a lousy way of keeping score.
I believe- That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down, will be the
ones to help you get back up.
I believe- That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give
me the right to be cruel.
I believe- That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what
you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.
I believe- That it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to
forgive yourself.
I believe- That no matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn't stop for your grief.
I believe- That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are
responsible for who we become.
I believe- Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.
I believe- That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.
I believe- That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you-
you will find the strength to help.
I believe- That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.
I believe- That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.
